Fresno, for real: what people love and what they don’t

The honest version of life in the Central Valley.

Fresno gets a mixed reputation. Here is the honest version from someone who chose to build a life here.

What people love

  • Location. Yosemite and Kings Canyon are each about 60 miles away, Sequoia about 75.
  • Food. Farm-fresh produce from the surrounding valley, and cooking from the Armenian, Hmong, Mexican and many other communities here.
  • Sunshine. Around 80% of possible sunshine, and cool, mild winters.
  • Range of price points across many different neighborhoods.

What people don’t

  • Summer heat. Summers are long, hot and dry.
  • Air quality can be poor in summer and during fire season.
  • Neighborhoods vary block by block, which is why local knowledge matters.

If that balance sounds right for you, start with the neighborhood guide.
