Why people move here

More home for your money

A Fresno County home costs about half of one in Los Angeles County and about a quarter of one in San Francisco. Many families move here to own a house with a yard, while staying within a few hours of the coast and an hour or two from Yosemite.

Schools

Choosing schools

For most families, schools decide the neighborhood. Fresno and Clovis are served mainly by two large public districts, plus charter, magnet, private and heritage schools.

  • Fresno Unified California's third-largest district, serving most of the city, with specialty schools such as Duncan Polytechnical and the Computech Middle School magnet.
  • Clovis Unified More than 43,000 students in Clovis and parts of north and northeast Fresno. Many families move for a Clovis Unified boundary.
  • Top-ranked high schools University High School ranked #7 in California in the 2025 U.S. News rankings; Clovis North, Edison and Clovis West also placed well.
  • Heritage school The Charlie Keyan Armenian Community School in Clovis offers preschool to 6th grade with daily Armenian language and culture.

Tip: a Fresno address can still be in Clovis Unified, and boundaries can split a street. Always check the district's school locator for the exact address before you make an offer.

Life in Fresno

What your weekends can look like

Before move-in day

Setting up utilities

Start your services 1–2 weeks before you get the keys, so the lights, water and internet work on day one. Who provides water and trash depends on whether your home is in the City of Fresno, the City of Clovis or unincorporated Fresno County, so check your address first.

Electricity & gas

PG&E

Start service online at pge.com or by phone. Have your new address, move-in date and ID ready. Ask about the CARE discount program if you qualify.

Water & trash: Clovis

City of Clovis Utility Billing

Apply with the city's online start-service form. Service usually starts by the end of the next business day; a $10 fee and a refundable $150 deposit go on your first bill, which can take up to two months to arrive.

Internet

AT&T Fiber or Xfinity

The two main home providers in Fresno. Check which one serves your exact address and book installation early, especially if you work from home.

Outside city limits

Your local district or provider

Some county and rural homes have a private water company, a well, a septic system or a separate trash hauler. Ask for these details during escrow.

Don't forget

The small things

Forward your mail with USPS, update your address with your bank and insurance, and transfer or cancel utilities at your old home.
